World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic Review – Stretching the Meaning of "Classic"

World of Warcraft (WoW) remains the most successful MMORPG, drawing numerous players even 20 years after its original release. Over two decades, WoW has undergone various changes, ranging from minor stat adjustments to major gameplay system overhauls. Recognizing that many players, including myself, preferred the original, more relaxed pace of WoW, Blizzard released the World of Warcraft Classic in 2019. The success of Classic is debatable, but it performed well enough for Blizzard to release expansions such as The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. Most players consider the second expansion as the turning point where WoW started to evolve into the game we see today.

The release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic is intriguing. Originally launched in 2010, Cataclysm brought a comprehensive overhaul to the base game's leveling zones, streamlining the process to reach the level 85 cap. The expansion also saw redesigns of various leveling dungeons and the first of many talent tree overhauls. Also, more WoW Cataclysm Classic Gold and rewards for players.

Starting a new character in Cataclysm Classic is a unique experience. The game feels faster-paced than previous Classic runs, with new quality-of-life features like in-game dungeon maps and loot tables for bosses. However, these changes make Cataclysm Classic feel less "Classic." The Dungeon Finder, introduced in Wrath of the Lich King and expanded in Cataclysm, allowed players to match up with others for dungeons and raids. While convenient, these tools reduced the community feel of WoW, making the experience less engaging.

Despite these changes, Cataclysm Classic excels in showcasing the drastic changes in the leveling experience. Quest lines now flow more naturally, guiding players from one settlement to the next and across zones. This streamlined storytelling is complemented by a more active gameplay pace, with higher actions per minute in combat and intensive end-game encounters.

Cataclysm feels like a middle ground between WoW Classic and modern WoW expansions like Dragonflight. By this stage, the Classic game may have moved too far along the timeline to be considered truly "Classic." Subsequent expansions brought further changes, but Cataclysm marked the first significant step toward streamlining the game.

One notable example of streamlining is the removal of weapon skills. Before Cataclysm, players would level up weapon skills through use, a vestigial mechanic that became obsolete with The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. Cataclysm removed this stat and de-emphasized others like elemental resistances, while also removing consumable arrows for hunters.

However, one of Cataclysm's greatest strengths—particularly evident in Cataclysm Classic—is its storytelling. Small-scale quest chains had major consequences, influencing the broader WoW narrative. An example is the groundwork laid for Garrosh Hellscream's descent into villainy, culminating in his role as the final antagonist of the next expansion.

Endgame content in Cataclysm Classic also offers much for players to look forward to, with the Firelands raid being a highlight. This raid is still considered an excellent group experience, with gear that remains visually impressive.

Ultimately, how players define WoW Classic will influence their enjoyment of Cataclysm Classic. For some, Cataclysm introduced some of WoW's worst tendencies, while others appreciate the streamlined leveling and faster-paced gameplay. Re-releasing Cataclysm as part of WoW Classic may stretch the definition of "Classic", but it still provides a unique and enjoyable experience.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic moves away from the slower-paced leveling of the original game, and the core gameplay of all classes is faster. While it leaves behind some of WoW's original charm, it remains an enjoyable game. Though it doesn't offer as much nostalgia as previous Classic releases, Cataclysm Classic is different enough from modern WoW to be worth revisiting.
